Do you ever find yourself constantly grappling with the weight of expectations? The “shoulds” that seem to lurk around every corner, silently judging your choices and actions? I know I used to “should” all over myself too. “I should be working instead of resting.” “I shouldn’t eat this delicious burger, I should learn to love salad.” The list goes on.
But here’s the truth: All these “shoulds” ever did for me was amplify the dissonance between my desires and what society expected of me. It’s a place of internal conflict, and it’s not a pleasant one to reside in.
In this blog post, I want to take you on a journey to liberate yourself from the shackles of these expectations. As a life coach for black women, my mission is to help you step into your power, embrace the light within, and bask in the love that you deserve. Let’s explore how we can break free from the cycle of “shoulds” and live life on our terms.
The Burden of “Shoulds”
Do any of these “shoulds” sound familiar to you? If they do, you’re not alone. Many of us find ourselves trapped in a web of societal expectations:
- “I should be better off financially.”
- “I shouldn’t feel frustration at being an only child taking care of my divorced parents.”
- “I shouldn’t feel unhappy, instead I should feel grateful for this life I have and everything in it.”
- “I shouldn’t give up a ‘good’ job just to follow a dream that may or may not come true.”
These “shoulds” often lead to feelings of shame, a heavy burden that serves no one.
Instead of trying to suppress these feelings, let’s shift our focus to examining the expectations that weigh us down. It’s crucial to ask ourselves:
- Are these expectations good for us?
- Are they truly necessary?
- Do they belong to us, or are they imposed by others?
- Can we change them to align with our authentic selves?
Empowerment begins with self-reflection and a willingness to challenge the expectations that no longer serve us. Remember, you hold the power to redefine these expectations.
